MORNIN' GLORY BLUES

By Ritagail Burleson

If I Really Believe in Holy Communion

And must I pray for all of those
Spoiled
Comfortable
Middle class
And upwards
Church persons
Who consider themselves so much
Holier
Than me and others without
Money
Simply because they have more and believe
God
Gave them more than me
Because they are so holy--
His bless-ed ones--
Must I pray for them
When they lose their mansions
Or, even if they don't?

Yes.

Must I treat them with love and gentleness
Even when they treat me like dirt
Or pass me by as if
I don't exist
While still expecting me to do their menial
Work?

Yes.

Emphatically- Yes.

Not because of duty,
Not because of some fear of God,
Not even because they are human
Like me
Even though they may choose to see me as
Not,
I pray for them simply because Jesus
Loves us all--
US
All.
